Tarascan Indians: Intriguing Pre-Columbian Civilization Of Artists, Warriors And Skilled Metallurgists
A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - What makes the Tarascans an intriguing pre-Columbian civilization?
The Tarascans, well-known for their outstanding musical and artistic abilities, are, first of all, famous for their highly advanced metallurgical technology that existed before the coming of the Spanish. Their knowledge of metalsmithing was considered far superior to that of the Aztecs.
Called by the Spanish ‘Tarascans’, these indigenous people occupied most of Michoacán, a state in west-central Mexico that extends to the Pacific Ocean. They flourished from 1100 to 1530. Today, they live mostly around lakes Pátzcuaro and Cuitzeo, in the highlands of central Michoacan.
