‘Cosmic Monster’ Zoomorph At Quiriguá Ruled By Cauac Sky, Great Maya Leader

A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - Inhabited since the 2nd century AD, Quiriguá was the capital of an autonomous and prosperous state during the reign of Cauac Sky (723–84). He was the greatest leader of the ancient Maya city-state of Quiriguá.

Quirigua lies only 30 miles (48 km) north of the city of Copan, in the surroundings of the Río Motagua. Recent hieroglyphic evidence suggests it was founded by Copan, and its overall layout closely resembles Copan's. Quirigua contains a few architectural groups of no great distinction, but it has impressive sandstone stelae and carved zoomorphic stones.
