The Sistine Chapel Cypher – Secret Messages In The Art Of Michelangelo
Thalia Lightbringer - AncientPages.com - You've heard of the da Vinci code, but what about the Michelangelo Code? Did this famous artist encode subversive messages in the work he did for the Church? Does the Sistine Chapel relate something other than the creation of man?
Michelangelo's Legacy
Everyone loves da Vinci, but Michelangelo's work is arguably more prominent. The David, the Pieta, the fresco of the battle of Cascina in Palazzo Vecchio's Hall of the Five Hundred in Florence that da Vinci and Michelangelo competed over, and of course God's finger giving life to Adam instantly come to mind when any artist thinks of this prolific Master of sculpture and art.
Michelangelo dropped his commissions in Florence when he was sought out by Pope Julius II. This was after the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent, who was a patron of both Michelangelo and Leonardo, and had a much more progressive view than those who took power after him. Michelangelo found that his art was not viewed in such a positive light with the new regime, but that he was wanted in Rome, so he understandably left some Florentine commissions unfulfilled in favor of working for the Pope.
But what about the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo 's best-known masterpiece? Did he use it to relate his own story and if so, why? What is coded into that illustrious Master Work besides the obvious Bible tales?
