Archaeologists report they have pulled a Medieval sword embedded in rock at the bottom of Vrbas river in Bosnia.

The 700-year-old sword was found 36 feet underwater, stuck in a rock while archaeologists were excavating a nearby castle.

According to Ivana Pandzic, archaeologist and curator at the Museum of the Republika Srpska the sword was stuck in "a solid rock, so special care was needed when pulling it out," the Sun reported.


Hailed by experts as a significant archaeological find, the ancient sword is now described as a "real-life Excalibur."

“Janko Vracar, a historian of the Republika Srpska Museum, the main museum in the mainly Serb entity of Bosnia, told the media that the sword was  of a type used from the end of the 13th to the first half of the 15th century, based on analysis of the blade,” Balkan Insight reports.

“It is a fairly well preserved specimen, which is relatively rare in our region, which is why its rescue and conservation is the priority for both the museum and the City of Banja Luka and Republika Srpska,” Vracar said.

Ancient swords are rarely found in the Balkan region, so this is a huge discovery. In nearly 90 years, only one medieval sword has been found which is why recovering the weapon and its conservation are a priority, experts say.
