Unearthed three years ago in the Aktütün area of Semdinli district, Hakkari Province—near the Türkiye–Iraq border—these remarkable stones, each weighing over 200 kilograms, were hidden beneath the earth, awaiting their discovery. Their distinctive size, shape, and intriguing clustering set them apart from ordinary geological formations in the region.
Although the origins and purpose of these mysterious stones remain uncertain, they serve as a reminder of the many unexplained wonders on our planet. Scientists need to examine these stones to uncover their secrets.
To protect these mysterious and heavy stones discovered in Konur village, Cafer Gezer, the village headman, relocated them to the front of his house using construction machinery. There, he placed the stones under protection, where they have been preserved for the past three years.
According to Gezer, some of these stones naturally surfaced along a nearby road while others were uncovered during excavation work. He clarified that this local safeguarding was intended as a temporary solution until specialists could examine them more thoroughly.
Speculations But No Scientific Answers
The origins and purpose of these stones remain unknown. However, there are various theories and speculations regarding their nature. Based on his preliminary research, Gezer suspects that these may not be ordinary rocks; he notes that their structure and surface features could indicate the fossilized remains of extinct animal species dating back millions of years. It is important to note that no formal scientific analysis has yet been conducted to confirm or disprove this hypothesis.

Gezer reported his findings to Hakkari University and received information suggesting that the stones might be transferred to the Van Museum for further study.

“Through my own research, I learned they were fossils. I reported the situation to Hakkari University, which suggested transferring them to the Van Museum for examination. The stones are very beautiful and unique in appearance. Experts have stated these may be fossils from ancient extinct animal species. We hope their mystery will be solved through proper investigation,” he said.
Despite these efforts, no comprehensive studies by archaeologists, geologists, or paleontologists have taken place so far.

Gezer continues advocating for an official investigation by Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well as relevant academic experts. Until such an examination occurs, these enigmatic stones—located near the border between Iraq and Türkiye—remain protected but unexplained as they await.
