‘Altar Of Twelve Gods’ (‘The Harmonious Gods’) At Gabii, Italy Was Once Place Of Refuge
A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - 'Altar of Twelve Gods', also called the Sanctuary of the Twelve Gods, depicts the twelve gods, who correspond to the Dii Consentes ('The Harmonious Gods'), an ancient list of twelve major deities, six gods and six goddesses, in the pantheon of Ancient Rome.
Its original purpose is still a mystery. Some believe it may once have served as the edge of a well, others as a sacred Zodiac altar. Over time, however, it became something deeply meaningful: the zero point from which all distances to Athens were measured, and, more importantly, a place of safety and hope.
