The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that the heavens did more than flash with winter lightning; they brought something much stranger: "exceptional flashes of lightning, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air."

For centuries, most historians have said these "dragons" were just psychological omens, vivid metaphors, or tricks of the atmosphere that seemed to warn of the Viking raid that followed months later. But if we set aside the monks' fear and focus on what they actually described, a striking question appears.
