Mysterious Melchizedek: ‘King Of Righteousness’ And Heavenly High Priest In Bible And Dead Sea Scrolls
A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - Melchizedek, whose name means "King of Righteousness", is definitely one of the most baffling figures in the Bible.
We cannot expand our knowledge about him because he is only mentioned in three Biblical books - Hebrews, Genesis, and Psalms.
Who was the mysterious Melchizedek?
Melchizedek is mentioned in an Aramaic rewriting of the book of Genesis found at Qumran, called “Genesis Apocryphon” (22.14-17).
In the Bible, the name “Melchizedek” appears only three times.
For the first time, he is introduced in Genesis, as a king of Salem (later known as Jerusalem) during the time of Abraham. Melchizedek, brings out bread and wine to Abraham, returning home to Canaan, from a victorious battle, in which he defeated four kings. Then Melchizedek blesses Abram:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth; And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” (Genesis 14:18-20)
Already here, we begin to wonder who Melchizedek really is.
