Mysterious Standing Deer Stones Of Mongolia -Their Purpose And Creators Remain Unknown
AncientPages.com - In Mongolia there are 700 mysterious standing stones covered with extraordinary carvings and patterns.
Who made them for what purpose? Until today, the standing stones of Mongolia refuse to give up their secrets. Were they used as headstones or did they perhaps have an entirely different meaning?
The tallest of the stones is 15 feet high and the shortest is just less than 2 feet. Examination of the enigmatic stones reveals that the carvings are divided into three groups. They are thought to represent the sky, the Earth and the underworld.
As so many other ancient cultures, people in Central Asia believed the underworld was a mysterious and shadowy place beyond ordinary human experience. The underworld is the realm of the dead.
The stones have been named "deer stones" because of the carved depictions that resemble a flying deer.
Deer stones are not only historical monument, but also art and cultural heritage.
Although they are the oldest known monuments, deer stones have extraordinary carvings and patterns.
