Tuchulcha: Wicked, Hideously Grotesque Etruscan Demon Identified With Both Male And Female Genders
A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - In ancient Etruscan belief, there is a mysterious being called Tuchulcha—a figure so unusual that scholars have long debated whether it is male or female. With an animal-like face and beard, yet often depicted in a woman’s dress, with pale pink skin and what appear to be breasts, Tuchulcha defies simple definition.
This enigmatic deity, sometimes described as a wicked god with demonic traits, reminds us that even in the distant past, people imagined powers that transcended ordinary boundaries. For centuries, Tuchulcha’s true appearance remained hidden, existing only in fragments of myth and speculation—until the summer of 1974, when a statue was finally unearthed at the Tarquinia Necropolis in Italy.
Tuchulcha’s story is a powerful symbol of how truth and understanding can lie buried for ages, only to emerge when the time is right.
