Mysterious Ancient Danube Stone Faces And The Fish Goddess Connection
Ellen Lloyd – AncientPages.com – When ancient Romans explored new territories and expanded their Empire, they encountered new European cultures whose people were sophisticated and intelligent.
One such example is the Vinca-Tordos Culture of Yugoslavia and western Romania that flourished from about 6000 BC to 3000 B.C. The name is derived from the village of Vinca located on the banks of the Danube river, just a few kilometers from Belgrade.
To the ancient Romans, the Vinca people were barbarians, but the term didn’t have the same meaning as it has today. In those days, a barbarian was a person who didn’t speak Greek.
At its peak, the Vinca culture was the most sophisticated Neolithic culture in the world. Since the language of the Vinca still remains undeciphered, unearthed artifacts constitute the only source of knowledge about this culture.
The Vinca culture produced many “curious masks and the most informative costumed figurines depicting women in extremely modern clothes like narrow skirts, and sleeveless upper-body panels, complimented with hip belts, aprons, jewelry, shoes, caps, hairstyles, bracelets, necklaces, and medallions.”
Some ancient figures of Old Europe remain shrouded in mystery. In one of our previous articles we discussed unusual mini artifacts discovered in the region, and today we take a closer look at another type of ancient statues that have confused many scientists.
