Mythical Biringan City – Invisible Portal To Another World Where Dangerous Engkantos Reside

Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - The location of Biringan City is unknown. Ancient legends and myths refer to Biringan City as a mysterious place inhabited by ancient spirits and Engkantos ("enchanted beings") who are shapeshifters able to take on human form.

Some say the place is invisible and can never be found. There are also folklore stories that tell Biringan City is an invisible portal leading to another world. According to some tales, the city can only be spotted during nighttime.

Biringan, which means "The Black City" or "the City Of The Unknown is supposed to be hidden somewhere between Gandara, Tarangnan, and Pagsanghan in the Samar province of the Philippines.

Many drivers have lost orientation in the area where Biringan City is supposed to exist in modern days. Locals believe this is because the engkantos have the power to enter the mind of the drivers. Sometimes, when this happens, drivers are no longer in control of their thoughts. Their orientation is lost, resulting in that drivers deviating from their intended path. Strangely, many people have also vanished in this area.

The shapeshifters who reside in the realm of BiringanCity are believed to lack a philtrum between their nose and lips. It is also said that everything the engkantos wear or eat is black. Locals tell that there are people who have actually seen the mythical city of Biringan that is inhabited by the dangerous engkantos. Seeing the mythical city is unfortunate because humans who sighted the place have occasionally become victims of demon possessions.

Biringan City's existence is still debated. Some seafarers claim they have spotted the city. According to their reports, they saw a "dazzling city of light" on moonless nights, for a few minutes. Those who have seen Biringan City describe it as a beautiful city with high-rise buildings and other magnificent structures equipped with advanced technology. All witness reports are similar. Although we can not offer solid evidence of the city's existence, all accounts of those who claim to have sighted the mythical place share a similarity that cannot be easily dismissed.

According to some reports, satellite images from a Japanese company allegedly revealed brightly lit tracts of lands in the region in the late eighties. The Japanese believed there were rich deposits of gold and uranium in the suspected area.

When they started to examine the region, mysterious accidents and mishaps plagued the project, forcing the Japanese company to shut down the operation and abandon the project entirely to avoid bankruptcy and cut their losses. This could, of course, be nothing more than a coincidence. Still, locals are convinced ancient legends and myths about the dangerous engkantos living in the Biringan City are true, and the region should be avoided.

The belief in invisible forces is widespread in Asia. Some ancient legends and myths reveal invisible creatures inhabit some areas. For example, as we mentioned in Ancient Pages earlier, the Orang Bunian are mysterious invisible "Whistle People" living in the forests. In Malay folklore, the Whistle People are believed to be forests spirits responsible for several mysterious disappearances in the forests.

Whether the Biringan City is really a portal to another realm is impossible to say. We do not even know if such portals exist on our planet, but it's interesting to note that the mythical city appears only during moonless nights, at certain times of the year.

The legend of Biringan City reminds a little of the mysterious and beautiful village of Brigadoon, a place where the passing of a century seems no longer than one night. The village is hidden somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, and it appears every hundred years for just one day.
