Enigmatic And Forgotten Polovtsian Stone Idols Of Eastern Europe
Ellen Lloyd – AncientPages.com - These enigmatic ancient stone statues, commonly referred to by locals as "stone idols," remain largely unknown beyond their regions of origin.
Historically known as the "Polovtsian statues," they are found in significant numbers across a wide geographic area, including Russia, southern Siberia, eastern Ukraine, Germany, Central Asia, and Mongolia.
Many of the Polovtsian statues portray male warriors in helmets and armor, equipped with swords, bows, and quivers, while the female figures are distinguished by details such as hats and purses.
In 2008, a team of archaeologists and conservators from Poland and the Czech Republic carried out careful maintenance work on the Polovtsian anthropomorphic late-medieval steles from the Veliklanadolskyi Forest Museum’s collection at Komsomolsky Podsiolok in eastern Ukraine.
