Apollo: Loved And Feared Greek God Of Divination, Prophecy, And Seer Of Zeus
A. Sutherland - AncientPages.com - Apollo stands as an astonishing force in Greek mythology—his power is nothing short of breathtaking. Imagine a being who could banish every form of evil, yet, if he chose, unleash a devastating plague and then miraculously lift it.
Originally revered as the god of shepherds, Apollo’s influence only grew more extraordinary after his establishment at Delphi. He became the master of medicine and healing, held sway over disease, excelled in archery, inspired music and poetry, and even invented the arts.
As confirmed by Greek myths, numerous legends, and countless iconic representations, Apollo was a handsome man with golden hair. Both gods and humans—women and men alike—fell in love with him.
The Greeks called him Phoebus ("the Shining One"), originally the name of the god Helios, but over time, the two gods became one. In early Greek myths, Helios drove the chariot of the sun across the sky each day. His sister Selene, often identified with the goddess Artemis, guided the moon. Eventually, Apollo became identified as Helios Apollo, and it became his duty to ride the chariot across the sky.
