Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - When stories about the mysterious Old Leather Man started circulating, many wanted to know more about the unusual man. People reported seeing a strange vagabond walking throughout New England. Sightings of the peculiar drifter were reported from 1883 to 1889, but who was he?
During a time when many vagabonds roamed the countryside, this individual stood out for his unique presence. He was known for wearing a hand-stitched suit crafted entirely from leather—pants, shirt, coat, scarf, shoes, and hat—all made by his own hands. Since he never disclosed his real name, locals called him the Old Leather Man. He followed a consistent 364-mile route spanning two states and several towns, completing this circuit every 34 days.
It seems the man, whoever he was, had some money because he could afford to buy food in local stores. Whether he was an American, Canadian, or European could never be adequately determined.
