Félag – Ancient Viking Company Organized Trade Finance

Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - During the Viking Age, organizing and financing trading possibilities was necessary. This was done through a system known as Félag, best described as an ancient Viking company.

The term Félag (Old Norse meaning "fellowship, the partnership") appears on several runic inscriptions. Félag could also mean comrade. 16 known runestones in Sweden mention the word Félag, and it is unknown whether these inscriptions were made in honor of Viking business people or comrades.

As previously mentioned on Ancient Pages, commerce played a vital role in the lives of Vikings, who established several important trading centers that many foreigners visited.
