Mysterious Devil’s Footprints In Maine – An Ancient Mystery That Will Never Be Solved

Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - Many years ago, there were over 20 remarkable footprints in the solid rock in Maine, USA. It remains a mystery when and by whom those tracks were made. It is also unknown how they could have been made in the ledge.

Are these mysterious prints a geological phenomenon? Were they made by humans, dinosaurs, prehistoric, or perhaps even unknown animals? No-one knows, and it’s doubtful we will solve this mystery because there are not many tracks left and those that remain are barely visible.

For generations, locals have told an ancient legend about how the footprints were made by the Devil who visited the town, Milo, in Maine during winter.

In the town of Milo, there are imprints of snowshoes in solid rock. The prints are still barely visible less than 2 miles from the Milo town line when driving towards Sebec on Rt 16.  They are today known as the Devil’s Footprints.

In Manchester, Maine, there are also some curious and large footprints made by “something” unknown. The footprints are leading to a cave located not far from the roadway.

Who Or What Could Stomp So Hard In Rock?

According to the Milo Historical Society story-tellers speak of “Satan and his dog fleeing Milo on a cold winter’s night, trekking over the hillside ledge and leaving their mark in time.

The Devil also supposedly blasted a cave deep in the rock with one fiery breath, as protection from the plummeting Maine temperatures.

The amusing legend is given further substance when one realizes that around 1906, when a dam was being constructed on the nearby Sebec River, a series of nearly identical snowshoe tracks were uncovered before the bulging eyes of the workmen! And the prints were headed straight for Satan’s cave!”

Modern scientists have not been able to explain the tracks, but they have suggested the imprints were formed as a result of glacial formation.  Geologists do not think the footprints were made by prehistoric animals because the rock formation dates before animal life appeared on the Earth.

Examination of the prints is difficult to conduct because they are almost gone. Some of the prints did have a marker at one time but it was vandalized along with the tracks in the rocks.

It’s impossible to determine the true nature of these rock prints and we will probably never learn the truth about how they came to existence. Perhaps some ancient mysteries are never meant to be solved.
