Rock-Hewn Burial Shafts And 38 Symbolic Pots Discovered In Abusir Necropolis, Egypt
AncientPages.com - Three rock-hewn burial shafts filled with coffins and faience pots have been uncovered in Egypt's Abusir necropolis near Cairo, reports Ahram Online.
The discovery was made after authorities received reports of illegal excavations in the area and the Supreme Council of Antiquities decided to conduct urgent excavations at the site.
Excavation revealed three rock-hewn burial shafts containing funerary goods, four wooden coffins covered with hieroglyphic texts but all four in bad preservation conditions.
One of the texts is related to King Ptolemy IV (244 – 204 BC), and the remaining text cannot be deciphered. In the coffins, archaeologists found four mummified bodies, presumably of birds and three round-shaped linen wrappings with the mummies' stomachs.
Additionally, archaeologists discovered 38 symbolic pots carved in faience and these artifacts will be restored.
